Why Board Service Matters
Board members play a vital role in helping Sauti Yetu fulfill its mission and strengthen its impact. They serve as ambassadors, advocates, advisors, and champions for the organization, helping ensure that Sauti Yetu remains strong, sustainable, and responsive to the needs of the communities it serves.
As the organization rebuilds and strengthens its Board of Directors, board members will play a vital role in providing strategic direction, strengthening governance, expanding the organization’s reach, and ensuring its long-term sustainability. Together, the board will build on Sauti Yetu’s legacy while helping shape its next chapter of growth and impact.
Board service is an opportunity to use skills, experiences, relationships, and passion to help create lasting change for African immigrant women, girls, and families.
Board Member Responsibilities
Governance & Leadership
Board members help guide Sauti Yetu by:
- Supporting the mission, vision, and values of Sauti Yetu
- Participating in strategic planning and organizational decision-making
- Reviewing and approving key policies, ensuring compliance with legal and fiduciary responsibilities, and establishing organizational priorities
- Providing oversight of the organization’s financial health and sustainability
- Acting in the best interests of the organization and the communities it serves
- Serving as thought partners to the Executive Director
Fundraising & Resource Development
Board members are expected to:
- Make a personally meaningful annual financial contribution to Sauti Yetu
- Support fundraising and resource development by introducing new donors, hosting small gatherings at their home or office, participating in cultivation events, and/or engaging in activities that help expand Sauti Yetu’s network of supporters
- Introduce prospective donors, funders, churches, corporations, sponsors, and community partners
- Help increase awareness of Sauti Yetu’s mission and impact by attending community events, advocacy days, rallies, speaking engagements, and other public engagement opportunities when possible
Ambassadorial Leadership
Board members serve as visible champions for Sauti Yetu by:
- Sharing Sauti Yetu’s story and impact with others
- Building relationships within their networks and communities
- Opening doors to opportunities, partnerships, and resources
- Advocating for the needs and strengths of African immigrant women and families
Characteristics of Exceptional Board Members
Sauti Yetu welcomes individuals from a variety of professional, cultural and lived experiences who:
- Believe in the mission and values of Sauti Yetu
- Care deeply about equity, opportunity, and community well-being
- Are willing to learn, engage, and contribute
- Enjoy building relationships and connecting with people
- Bring thoughtful ideas, diverse perspectives, and demonstrate humility when working with fellow board members, staff, and the communities Sauti Yetu serves
- Follow through on commitments and work collaboratively with others
Professional expertise in areas such as fundraising, communications, finance, law, human resources, public policy, public health, education, technology, community development, and/or nonprofit leadership is especially valued.
Expectations of Board Members
Board member will be expected to:
- Support organizational goals and strategic priorities
- Serve as positive champions of Sauti Yetu’s mission
- Attend at least 75% of scheduled board meetings, participate in the annual board retreat, and join special meetings as needed
- Serve on at least one committee or task force
- Prepare for meetings by reviewing materials in advance
- Play an active role in expanding Sauti Yetu’s network of supporters through fundraising, relationship building, and community engagement
- Maintain the confidentiality of board discussions and always act in the best interests of Sauti Yetu
